EMDR Research News December 2012

Here are this month’s recently published, peer-reviewed journal articles related to EMDR. There are 9 new EMDR articles, including one full text, open access article on EMDR treatment of addiction. I am also pleased to announce the publication of the Spanish edition of my 2009 book A Guide to the Standard EMDR Protocols for Clinicians, Supervisors, and Consultants.

Several other articles of interest appear this month. Perhaps most crucial to EMDR's scientific acceptance is the long awaited meta-analysis from Chris Lee and Pim Cuijpers examining 15 clinical and 11 laboratory trials in which there was both an EMDR treatment and a no eye movement condition. They found "the additive effect of eye movements in EMDR treatment studies was moderate and significant." While this may seem like old news to EMDR clinicians who depend on this effect for clinical purposes, funding for EMDR research in the USA has languished in the long shadow of Davidson and Parker's (2001) statistically flawed paper which claimed eye movements made no difference over "exposure". Lee and Pim (2012) conclude, "Results ... suggest the processes involved in EMDR are different from other exposure based therapies."

Those who were concerned about Hornsveld et al.'s 2011 paper "Evaluating the Effect of Eye Movements on Positive Memories Such as Those Used in Resource Development and Installation" in Volume 5 number 4 of JEMDR, will want to read the commentary by Leeds and Korn "A Commentary on Hornsveld et al. (2011): A Valid Test of Resource Development and Installation? Absolutely Not" and the rebuttal by Hornsveld, de Jongh and ten Broeke "Stop the Use of Eye Movements in Resource Development and Installation, Until Their Additional Value Has Been Proven: A Rejoinder to Leeds and Korn (2012)" in Volume 6 number 4 of JEMDR. See the abstracts below.

EMDR Research News July 2012

Here are this month’s recently published, peer-reviewed journal articles related to EMDR. This month we find all European reports: two surveys on the use of specialized methods of treating trauma, one from from Germany (Kliem et al, 2012 for Type II trauma) and one from the UK (Murphy et al., 2012 for NICE informed specialty trauma services); three case reports from Switzerland and France on EMDR treatment of illegal drug use, victims of domestic abuse, and domestic partner rape; a laboratory study from the working memory group in the Netherlands of the effects of eye movements on reaction times for “future recall”; and two theoretical papers. Rachel Worthington (2012) proposes that violence is often the result of traumatic experiences and that EMDR should be considered preferable to exposure and TF-CBT when treating traumatic origins of violence. Finally Hans Welling proposes that methods such as EMDR, based on reconsolidation are preferable for “transforming maladaptive emotions, whereas exposure is most appropriate for accessing disowned and avoided experiences.” After reading Welling’s abstract below, readers may want to review my February 2010 essay on “Extinction or Reconsolidation: Differences between suppression and transformation in how we recover from traumatic experiences.

EMDR Research News May 2012

Here are this month’s recently published, peer-reviewed journal articles related to EMDR. This month I reprise the pilot study by van den Berg and van der Gaag, “Treating trauma in psychosis with EMDR” which was indexed in December 2011 for its online publication, and now for its print publication in March 2012. It highlights the application of EMDR to a well-documented series of cases of psychosis with co-occurring PTSD without any extended preparation or adverse treatment effects. There is also a systemic review by Haugen, Evces and Weiss, “Treating posttraumatic stress disorder in first responders” in which four of the 17 studies involved treatment with EMDR. This month you will also find a summary of a forthcoming book Child Psychotherapy by our EMDR colleague, Robbie Adler-Tapia now available for pre-publication purchase as well as the video of the month, “About EMDR” from the EMDR Association of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
